Music Performance

Vocal Performance:

The clips below are from my performances in Cabaret workshops and open mic nights since 2010. The workshops have been some of the most fun and fulfilling creative collaborations I have ever been involved with. I sang music by Steven Sondheim, Jaques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Cole Porter, U2, The Eels, Elton John, and others I never would have imagined singing, as well as inspiring me to write a number of my own original songs.

We collected music from the late 1800’s up to the present day, to create original shows. The music informed and infused the stories, characters, and relationships with surprises, growth, and creative passion. Sometimes we tweaked lyrics to adjust a narrative in a new context or add humor.

as Elwood Purvis Gently – from “Psycholicious”

Discovering singing, acting, developing characters, and eventually finding the confidence and inspiration to write and perform my own songs in this framework—as well as to create art and animations for the staging of the shows—has been amazing!

And, yes. I have played some very strange characters, such as Elwood Purvis Gentlyˇthe effete crack-addict who could not resist looking at the crack showing above a woman’s waistline as she bends over to pick something up. Then there was the French Douchebag, Phil Devoid, the Talent agent who tried to pick up a nun. And, yes, a cannibal who ate children.

Videos

These are not the best recordings—or performances—but, for pulling shows out of thin air, we entertained a lot of people and had a blast.

“Talent”

I wrote and performed this as the character of Phil DeVoid, a sleazy talent agent who assures the ladies that he can show them how to make it big. Yes, BIG! in the music industry. Lyrics and music © Greg Klamt 2012. Created for “The Last Stop Cafe” (A Ric Henry Production) in July 2012.

“Nun of The Above”

Sister Florecita has shared the fact that before she became a nun, she wanted to be a country singer, and this was her big chance to try out singing again. She also revealed that she has fallen in love with her Mother Superior. Ooopsie… Well, Phil DeVoid is going to help straighten out this predicament! What kind of d-bag tries to pick up a nun?

“The French Song”

Parody of “La Vie en Rose” by Edith Piaf and Louis Guy
Performed at “The Best of the Best” at Tango Del Rey in Dec. 2012. The original version of the parody was written by Australian singer, Greg Champion. I added a beret, and freshened up the words a bit.

“Crack Addict” © Greg Klamt 2012

I created the Elwood Purvis Jently character for “Psycho-Licious” in March 2012. Elwood had a bit of an obsession for crack. Every time a woman bent over he would start to sweat at the flesh at the top of her pants.
A Ric Henry Production. Joanie Yribe on Piano.

“Restraining Order Blues”

I created the Elwood Purvis Jently character for “Psycho-Licious” in March 2012.
This fabulous song was written by The Eels, though I rewrote the second half of the lyrics for “Psycho-Licious” in March 2012. Written by The Eels.

“You’d Be Surprised” by Irving Berlin

From the show “Ric and Loren’s Follies” Sept 2010.

“I Think It’s Going to Rain Today”

By Randy Newman. Performed by Greg Klamt at Tango Del Rey, San Diego 2/11/13

“The French Song” (ver. 2)

From the show “Paris After Midnight” June 2011. (A parody of “La Vie En Rose” by Edith Piaf and Louis Guy. The original parody was created by an Australian singer named Greg Champion, though I liberally twisted his lyrics. Thanks, Greg!)
